When it ended, he returned to Britain, unemployed and unsure of what to do next. He said: “I came back at Christmas 1969, completely broke. I had no chance of getting a job, I didn’t have a flat, I didn’t have a car and I had no savings. Then I had this crazy, crazy idea to write a novel “Everyone said you were either joking or crazy because the odds of getting it published are a hundred to one, if not a thousand.” The rights were snapped up to play the Jackal in the 1973 film, but the role went to the then-unknown Edward Fox because director Fred Zinnemann thought he could blend in unseen in a crowd. Referenced on The Graham Norton Show: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024) I have to agree with many other critics, this is a great production with great atmosphere and Eddie Redmayne does a great job as the Jackal, but the female lead ruins it. t show any facial emotion no matter what the situation and almost borders on overacting, perhaps in an effort to compensate for the lack of understanding or appreciation of the character. The character is obviously supposed to be confident and experienced, but her portrayal is that of an arrogant “I know better” woman who, for her part, has no idea what evidence to provide as she walks around the general office with her suitcase. She is just so irritating and unbelievable.
