Scenario
A Montana ranching family faces off against others encroaching on their land. Forrie J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and reverts to the SoCal speaking voice he normally uses.

Kevin Costner is the patriarch who presides over a dynastic ranch the size of some towns. His way of life is being compromised by resort developers, tribal rights and the authority of the state of Montana. Reminiscent of Rock Hudson in “Giant,” he’s trying to maintain the old ways.
Costner fills his character’s boots naturally, it seems
“Yellowstone” builds quickly with few introductions, but its story unfolds with the natural pace of a day in the wilderness, pausing for tribal rituals, cowboy conventions and political machinations. It’s a far-reaching undertaking that lingers on the lines between law and justice, family and friendships. He’s a world-weary man who’s seen too much and lied too often.
The land and his family are his lifeblood
He can hear the footsteps approaching, but he can only play his role out of habit and loyalty. Even if some of the actions are a bit confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is authentically seeing them as a glimpse of life in another world. I hope the conclusion of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.

Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a persistent pace. We learn the fullness of each story, from the roots to the fruits. I’m increasing my rating to “9.” A new season of “Silo” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
